October 2024 – Following the catastrophic impact caused by Hurricane Helene in the southeastern US, Planet Water Foundation initiated a major response to meet the urgent need for safe drinking water.
With residents in Asheville, North Carolina facing unprecedented challenges with access to water, the Planet Water Foundation team has over the course of one week deployed multiple AquaBlock emergency water filtration systems in Asheville and surrounding communities.
Each AquaBlock produces safe drinking water and has been setup in locations that are open for community members to access throughout the day.
In these locations, the AquaBlock pulls source water from creeks and other available sources, and brings this water through a four-stage filtration process to produce safe drinking water for community members to use.
Both the water source and the filtered water are tested by Planet Water technicians before the water is made available to the community for use.
“You really don’t think about how much you use water until you don’t have it.”
Demika Washington
“I haven’t had a potable water source that’s easy to access. I’ve been using a lot of bottled water and canned water. But this is a game changer – to be able to use our local water sources, purify it, and have easy access to the water.”
Katherine Wilson, community volunteer
